LAS CATACUMBAS DE KOM EL SHOGAFA
Se encuentran en la ciudad de Alejandría concretamente en el barrio Karmouz. Fueron descubiertas a principios del siglo XX y son el vivo testimonio del pasado romano de la ciudad de Alejandria, durante la época del Emperador Antonino, del siglo II después de Cristo. Puede que en origen fuere una tumba privada, pero con posterioridad pasó a ser un cementerio público.
Consta de tres niveles, con infinidad de pasillos, vestíbulos, antecámaras y finalmente cámaras funerarias. A medida que vas bajando los niveles en forma de caracol, se pueden observar en sus paredes los diferentes nichos excavados en la roca.
La entrada a la cámara funeraria, esta profusamente decorada con temas de origen griego, representaciones de la Diosa Atenea y Medusa. Tambien encontramos sarcófagos de piedra y en esta zona, la decoración es egipcia con representaciones de los dioses Thot y Anubis

The catacombs of Kom el Shogafa

are located in the city of Alexandria specifically in the Karmouz neighborhood. They were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and are the living testimony of the Roman past of the city of Alexandria, during the time of the Emperor Antoninus, from the 2nd century after Christ. It may have originally been a private grave, but later it became a public cemetery.
It consists of three levels, with infinity of corridors, halls, antechambers and finally burial chambers. As you go down the levels in the form of a snail, you can see on its walls the different niches excavated in the rock.
The entrance to the burial chamber, is lavishly decorated with themes of Greek origin, representations of the Goddess Athena and Medusa. We also find stone sarcophagi and in this area, the decoration is Egyptian with representations of the gods Thot and Anubis.
