Egypt opens three ancient tombs in Luxor for the first time in a bid to lure tourists after Russian jet disaster

Three tombs in Egypt’s ancient city of Luxor have been opened to visitors for the first time amid fears that tourists will choose to holiday elsewhere following a plane disaster that left more than 200 people dead.

Amid growing suspicion that a bomb brought down the Russian holiday jet, Egypt’s tourism bosses are hoping the tombs and the reopening of two others that were recently restored will spur interest in the country’s attractions.

The newly opened tombs, in Qurnat Marey, are among the most important resting places for nobles of the New Kingdom period, which ended more than 3,000 years ago, said the country’s antiquities minister, Mamdoug Eldamaty.
